Emergency Preparations

Over the years I have been a Den mother for 12 Cub Scouts, represented my department (70 people) as the Earthquake Preparedness Trainer/Contact and experienced hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires and mudslides personally or in my neighborhood.  As I watched, listened to others experiences and read stories I have developed lists and techniques for myself.  Because of my awarenesses, others have asked me to teach them as well.

My book, Are Your Ready?, is in outline format at the current time. As I watch and listen to the disaster from Katrina I realize there is a need for increased awareness.  I will begin with the ten basics as they give you some things to think about and give you some basic information to make a safe transition in an emergency situation much easier.

Emergency Kit if stranded or lost

Carry this in your car or on a hike

1 - Coffee Can (1#) with lid                      2 - 30 gallon trash bags

1 - candle, fat stick or fire starter           1 - lighter or Box of waterproof matches

3 - tea bags                                           5 - packets of sugar

3 - salt packages                                    3 - bandages

3' of duct tape                                        1 - plastic whistle

Options

1 - small knife                         1 - flashlight - hand crank

1 - compass                             1 - bandana - hat, wash cloth, sun screen, sling, bandage

1 - Roll of Toilet Paper              Plastic bags or trowel to dig hole and cover

How to use your kit

Can - Teapot, cup, signal mirror (or use CD)

Candle, fat stick, fire starter saves matches

Sugar - Helps generate body heat

Tea - Gives a boost to hot water (be sure and carry fresh water)

Whistle - Signal help, locator

Tape - Patch trash bags, Secure shelter, secure bandages, make splint

1 - pencil

Trash Bags - Poncho, overnight shelter, rain parka, sleeping bag  Cut a small hole in one corner of one bag for your face, pull over your head.  Second bag can be pulled up over your feet and tuck in belt or pockets.  It can also be secured with the tape.  Fill bags with leaves, clothes, stuffing if you need to stay warm.  Staying warm is the most important key to survival.

Print this list on bright paper and keep in can.  It can be used to leave notes, signal flag, trail marker
